Once again, our entire school community – our teachers, librarians, students, staff, and parents – will read the same terrific children’s book at the same time!

Beginning this Friday ,March 3rd, we are planning to share another excellent children’s novel together to kick off our OSOS program for the second half of the school year. Research supports that reading aloud to children at any age is a great way to encourage a love of reading, develop longer attention spans, teach vocabulary, model fluency, foster empathy, and share quality time together.

Please join us as we read aloud, discuss, and explore our selected children’s book, Charlotte’s Web by E. B. White. We will host two assemblies to kick off the OSOS program with a special guest reading the first chapter, maybe Wilbur himself! At the close of the assembly each student will be provided a book and a reading schedule.  Trust that sharing this story will encourage a love for reading and a shared community conversation. Families, please help share your enthusiasm by participating in this school-wide event.

We have designed a reading schedule to help guide us through the chapters of the book so we can coordinate fun activities and events for the students each week. Throughout the read-along we will invite guest readers within our community to participate in our “Mystery Reader” program. The “Mystery Reader” will cover two to or more chapters each week that can be viewed through our website by accessing the youtube videos at www.belchertownps.org > go to Swift River Elementary School>  front page click Charlotte’s Web link. The video clips will give students many opportunities to listen and read along with each chapter as frequently as they’d like.

We would like to make this fun and engaging for everyone, especially our students, while celebrating the importance of reading and building a community around quality literature.

Parent pick up

Dismissal Procedure

Families new to the dismissal procedure please read through these guidelines. The parent pick up room during dismissal time, 3:00PM, will be accessed at the back of the school building using the exterior door nearest the playground. The door will be clearly marked the first week of school with signs and balloons. This will give parents additional parking, between 40 to 50, as well as address safety concerns created by the volume of traffic at the end of the school day. The exterior door will be unlocked at 2:55PM for parent access.

Parents will enter and exit the back parking lot one of two ways, using the State Street access road or the road nearest to Little Fenway baseball field.

As you enter the back of the building you will enter the C side cafeteria which is a short distance from the exit door. The pick-up room will be reversed and parents will be able to sit at the first four tables as you enter.

IMPORTANT: Morning drop off, parents will drop their child off at the front main entrance to Swift River where Mrs. Farrington and Mr. Kuhn stand.

Below you will find a map of the traffic pattern around the school during dismissal time. The location of the Student Pick-Up Room is identified with a star on the map.

Please note, parent(s) that needs to pick their child up earlier than dismissal time will park in front to access the Main Office. Please be aware not to park in the fire lanes, instead use the visitor parking to walk in. Thank you in advance for respecting our process.
