Massachusetts regulations require all public school districts to offer a free kindergarten program for their residents. The kindergarten programs must include a minimum of 425 hours of structured learning time per academic school year or 2.5 hours per day.
Belchertown is proud to share that our kindergarten program, housed at Cold Spring School, is a full day program for students of eligible age. To be eligible to begin Kindergarten in the Belchertown Public Schools, your child must be 5 years of age on or before September 1st of the new school year. Children, who are not 5 years old by September 1st, must wait until the following year to start kindergarten in the Belchertown Public Schools.
All new Kindergarten students MUST register, even students who attend the Early Childhood Program at Cold Spring School. When coming to register your child, please bring an original copy of his/her birth certificate with the raised seal, immunization records, most recent physical, and 2 proofs of Belchertown residency (mortgage statement/lease agreement and utility bill with current address listed on the bill).
After your child is registered for kindergarten, he/she will participate in the kindergarten screening process. The kindergarten screening is designed to review a child’s development and to assist in identification of those children who should be referred for an evaluation to determine eligibility for special education services. Kindergarten screening for the upcoming school year will take place during the first week of school. You will be notified by mail of the exact date and time you are to bring your child in for his/her kindergarten screening.
For additional information or any questions about kindergarten registration or screening, please call the Cold Spring School office at 323-0428 between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
